Together, we are AmeriCorps

2022 Trident United Way AmeriCorps members at Neighbors Together

By Angie Williams, Trident United Way AmeriCorps Program Manager

Every March, we celebrate AmeriCorps Week. This year we celebrated March 13-19.

During AmeriCorps Week we recognize the commitment of the millions of Americans who have chosen to serve their communities through AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps Seniors and encourage more Americans to follow in their footsteps of service. Throughout the week we shared notes and videos of gratitude from Trident United Way staff and AmeriCorps host sites and highlighted current AmeriCorps members. The week ended with a service project at Neighbors Together.

We are thankful for all the work accomplished by so many and look forward to seeing the continued impact throughout our community.

I would like to take a minute and introduce you to one of our members William McCann serving at Neighbors Together in North Charleston.

William McCann, Trident United Way AmeriCorps Member

William (Will) is a 22-year-old born and raised in New York City. He spent most of his teenage years in New York but graduated high school in Washington D.C. In 2021 he earned his Bachelor of Science in Sociology at the College of Charleston (cofc.edu) and was a member/captain of the men’s cross-country team. Other than serving with AmeriCorps, he enjoys hobbies such as running, surfing, playing chess and listening to music.

His study of sociology at CofC led to his interest in social work, and ultimately his service with our AmeriCorps (tuw.org/americorps) program. During undergraduate studies, he gravitated towards the concept of how society is impacted by the individual and vice versa. He feels AmeriCorps has given him an opportunity to further explore this interest and make a positive impact within the Charleston community.

Will states “this year at AmeriCorps has been fulfilling, and I am excited for what lies ahead. AmeriCorps has given me the opportunity to achieve face-to-face interactions with the residents in the area, and to look for better ways to help individuals as well as the community.”

I hope Will’s story can be an inspiration for all! Looking for a way to participate with us?
