Tri-County COVID-19 Response Fund

From mid-March to the end of June 2020, Trident United Way fundraised for the Tri-County COVID-19 Response Fund to address the emerging needs presented by the impact from COVID-19 (Coronavirus). Our goal was to UNITE our community to give generously as one of the ways we lead the support efforts in the Tri-County region to improve lives.

And our list of generous donors, including foundations, corporations and individual donors, did just that!

Trident United Way's Tri-County COVID-19 Response Fund, totaling $511,884, surpassed the fundraising total of any single event in our 75-year history.

The previous record for a single emergency relief fund was in October 2015 for “1,000-year flood.” Over a four-day period, some parts of the Charleston area reported more than 2 feet of rain. Trident United Way raised $401,000 for response efforts.

“Whether it’s been a hurricane, flood or other economic disaster, Trident United Way has been here for our community,” said Chloe Knight Tonney, Trident United Way president and CEO. “The negative economic effects of COVID-19 will unfortunately be with us for some time. We are grateful to our individual, foundation and corporate donors who have stepped up to answer this historic challenge. Their help will continue to be needed as this challenge continues.”

Here's how you've already helped: Your dollars have improved lives

Thanks to generous donors, we have been able to fund 11 phases of agency awards from the Tri-County COVID-19 Response Fund. Because of you and your investments, together we have helped more than 49,000 individuals with food, housing, utility assistance and basic needs to-date.  THANK YOU!

  • To aid in the response, Trident United Way set aside $50,000 in emergency funds to match dollar-for-dollar any public donations up to $50,000.

  • Trident United Way underwrote all costs associated with disbursing 100% of the funds going directly to COVID-19 response and relief efforts. In the unlikely case all funds are not spent, remaining funds will be set aside in a reserve fund for use during future response efforts.

  • Tri-County COVID-19 Response Fund contributions have been used for:

    • Supporting basic needs to address loss of work or other financial hardships

    • Deploying efficient emergency networks of agencies with proven on the ground experience

    • Supporting nonprofit partners with the surge of assistance requests and supplement service capacity

Trident United Way is uniquely positioned to handle this large-scale effort, as it has a long history of leading special funds for past disasters like hurricanes and floods. All funds will stay in the Tri-County.

Thank you to our generous donors!
