On Friday, March 1st, Trident United Way will be hosting the 7th Annual Read Across America Day. Volunteers will visit classrooms at local elementary schools to read a book (or two!) to students in local elementary schools.
Volunteers can be as creative as they like using fun props, costumes, backdrops and more! Either way, your reading will inspire a future generation of readers.
Studies show that early reading with an adult can greatly improve crucial literacy skills.
- From birth to age five, 90% of a child’s brain development occurs.
- More than half of South Carolina 5th graders test below standards in English Language Arts.
- Children who are read to at least three times per week by an adult are almost twice as likely to score in the top 25% in reading compared to children who are read to less than 3 times a week.
Trident United Way believes every child has equal value and equal promise. Together, we can accomplish positive changes in education for every child in the Tri-County area.
Volunteers can sign up to read this Friday at any of the following schools:
Berkeley County:
- Boulder Bluff Elementary
- Mount Holly Elementary
- St. Stephen Elementary
