The United Way Association of South Carolina (UWASC) recently hosted its annual Public Policy Day, bringing together United Way leaders from across the state to advocate for critical community services, particularly our SC-211 Helpline. This annual event serves as South Carolina United Ways’ “launch” into the current legislative session and offers a platform for discussing key policy initiatives, sharing insights and engaging with legislators about the impact of United Way’s work across our state.
As we began the day, we heard from our UWASC leaders and our dedicated state lobbyist to gain deeper understanding about our shared goals in the State House this session. Trident United Way staff was also given an opportunity to lead conversations on the SC-211 Helpline and share our experiences from United Way Worldwide’s Capitol Hill Day in Washington, D.C. last summer, where we experienced firsthand the critical importance of local and statewide collaboration in driving meaningful change.
One of the highlights of Public Policy Day was our traditional United Way BBQ lunch, where we had the opportunity to connect with legislators and their staff in an informal setting. These conversations allowed us to discuss, in-depth, the significance of our 211 Helpline—a critical resource that connects individuals with essential services such as housing assistance, food programs and mental health support.
We also shared details about our upcoming legislative request for state funding to support the expansion, upgrades and enhancements of the 211 system. By improving this vital resource, we can better serve South Carolinians in need and ensure that help is accessible to all, 24/7.
The day also offered ample time to spend with colleagues from numerous local United Ways and learn more about their efforts in their respective communities.
Overall, Public Policy Day was a great success, reinforcing Trident United Way’s commitment to advocacy and community support. However, our work is far from over. We need your help to continue educating our legislators about the importance of 211 and securing the necessary funding for its growth.

Your voice can make a difference in strengthening this crucial service for our communities for many years to come. Together, we can ensure that help is just a call away when our neighbors need it most.
