HALOS has become an essential support system for kinship families in the Tri-County community, offering critical services to caregivers—such as teachers, grandparents and aunts—who take in children unable to live with their biological families. With a focus on navigating the complexities of kinship care, HALOS provides financial aid for immediate needs, hosts parenting support groups and offers vital resources to help alleviate the challenges these families face. A recent Changemaker Grant from Trident United Way has significantly enhanced HALOS's capacity, allowing for increased financial assistance and improved access to crucial resources.

“The Changemaker Grant is instrumental in supporting families during their most challenging times,” said HALOS Director of Programs Khalilah Sumners. “It helps ensure that families can stay in their homes, keep the lights on and have enough food while they wait for their SNAP benefits to begin.”

By fostering a sense of community and offering comprehensive support, HALOS empowers kinship
families to create stable, nurturing environments for their children. With this expanded capability,
HALOS is making a profound difference in the lives of more kinship families across Charleston,
strengthening both individual household and the community as a whole.
