When Lisa Gethard’s devastating pain and sickness became more than she could manage, her husband Scott had to quit his job to take care of her. Facing homelessness, they sought financial assistance from Trident United Way and its partners – East Cooper Community Outreach and the Lowcountry Food Bank -- who first addressed the couple’s underlying health problems. That enabled them to improve their financial circumstances.

“I had a high paying job and never thought something like this would happen to me” Lisa said. “It could happen to anyone.”

Lisa participated in a cooking class where she learned meal planning, budgeting and nutrition. She took yogic breathing classes that taught her exercises to lower blood pressure, de-stress and manage pain. She is now more independent, healthy and active. That has allowed Scott to return to work and restore their self-sufficiency on Daniel Island.
